Stop child labour
|
NAIROBI The IFM-SEI organised together with the Global Progressive Youth Forum a child labour workshop at the World Social Forum. Milli Ongila from the Kenian Trade Union described how they started to combate child labour in their country. They could convince their governement to change the laws and sign an agreement with the ILO. Max van den Berg, MEP and former director of OXFAM made clear that everybody has to understand that child labour is a crime and the cause of poverty, not a solution. Cecillia Brighi, workers member of the ILO governing body demanded more consistency. She criticised that the US and the EU on one side run child labour programmes and on the other side create with their agricultural subventions and other programmes the causes of poverty. In a discussion including child workers the panel discussed ways out of poverty. They all concluded that children need education and support, not child labour.
