So, what are the Millennium Development Goals? The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were agreed at the United Nations Millennium Summit in September 2000. Since then nearly 190 countries have signed up to them. They aim to encourage the international community, governments, civil society, national and international organisations, to stop talking about making a difference in the developing world and join forces to start doing something productive.
Within each over arching goal are specific target which outline a number of tangible improvements to aim for within a fixed time. The intention is that almost all of these targets will be achieved by 2015.
Unfortunately, the latest figures suggest while some progress is being made towards meeting the targets, in many cases progress has been inconsistent, slow, or non-existent. Also important other issues and goals are missing. That why the IFM-SEI made its own adaption of the goals.
